Further information

When is it advisable to get tested for STIs?

If you are concerned that you may have contracted a sexually transmitted infection through unprotected sex, you should get tested. This is especially important if your sexual partner has been diagnosed with an STI. Regular testing is also recommended if you have multiple sexual partners and are sexually active. Sexually transmitted infections often have no symptoms, but you can still pass on the infection even if you have no symptoms. Most sexually transmitted infections can be treated effectively, so avoid undetected infections and possible long-term consequences and get tested regularly!

If you notice any symptoms, see a doctor immediately.

How does a test for sexually transmitted diseases work?

1. Order your test kit, which will be delivered to your home free of charge. The packaging is neutral to protect your privacy.

2. Read the instructions carefully or watch the explanatory video.

3. Collect your sample in a familiar environment.

4. Place your sample in the enclosed sample protection bag and put everything in the addressed, prepaid and neutral return envelope.

HPV

Human papillomavirus (HPV) belongs to the Papillomaviridae family and includes more than 200 different types. Low-risk HPV types can cause benign skin changes such as warts, while other types, particularly HPV 16 and 18, are classified as high-risk and are associated with an increased risk of developing cancer, especially cervical cancer.HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection worldwide. It is estimated that up to 75% of sexually active individuals will be infected with at least one type of HPV during their lifetime.

High-risk HPV types

A persistent infection with high-risk HPV types can lead to cancer. In Germany, approximately 35% of women aged 20–25 are infected with a high-risk HPV type. Most of these infections are temporary and disappear within 1–2 years. However, an HPV infection can also persist for longer periods of time and, in some cases, lead to precancerous lesions and ultimately to cancer. In Germany, approximately 6,250 women and around 1,600 men develop HPV-related cancers each year. Cervical cancer is almost exclusively caused by HPV. There are 14 different high-risk HPV types (6, 18, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 56, 58, 59, 66, and 68), with infections with HPV 16 or 18 responsible for most HPV-related cancers.

How is HPV transmitted?

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is primarily transmitted through direct skin-to-skin contact and sexual activity. Unprotected sexual intercourse, whether vaginal, anal, or oral, is the main route of transmission and accounts for approximately 90% of all HPV infections. While the use of condoms can significantly reduce the risk of infection, it does not offer complete protection, as transmission can also occur in areas not covered by the condom. In rare cases, HPV can be passed from mother to child during childbirth.

What factors increase the risk of an HPV infection?

  • Unprotected sexual intercourse
  • Multiple sexual partners or partners with an unknown HPV status
  • Weakened immune system
  • Pre-existing sexually transmitted infections

Precancerous lesions caused by persistent infections with high-risk HPV types often develop without any noticeable symptoms. In order to detect these asymptomatic cell changes in the cervix at an early stage and treat them if necessary, Germany has a cervical cancer screening programme for early detection. There are currently no early detection programmes for other potential sites of infection or for men. This is why early detection of HPV infection with high-risk HPV types is particularly important.

Signs of cervical cancer:

  • Intermenstrual bleeding or postmenopausal bleeding
  • Pain and bleeding during sexual intercourse
  • Pain in the pelvic area
  • Changes in vaginal discharge

If you experience any of these symptoms, consult a doctor immediately.

Long-term effects

  • Increased risk of cervical cancer in women
  • Increased risk of carcinomas in the vagina and vulva, as well as in the mouth, throat and anal area

How do I receive my test result?

As soon as the test results are available, we will inform you via email. You can access the results immediately.

How quickly will I receive my test result?

The medical laboratory report will be ready for you 2-3 days after the sample arrives at the laboratory.

What does a negative test result mean?

No HPV was detected in the sample material you collected. Please note the connection between the time of infection and the time of testing. Under certain circumstances, it may be advisable to repeat the test after an appropriate interval of 2-3 months.

Was bedeutet ein positives Testergebnis?

High-risk HPV types were detected in your sample. You should inform your sexual partners about the results of your test and seek medical advice. Our doctors will be happy to advise you on how to proceed and the treatment options available.

How can HPV be treated?

There is currently no specific antiviral therapy for HPV, especially not for high-risk HPV types. Treatment therefore aims to alleviate symptoms and remove warts or abnormal cell changes. Preventive vaccines are available for some HPV types and are particularly recommended for young people.

Risk of infection with other pathogens

An HPV infection can serve as a gateway for other pathogens, thereby increasing the risk of other sexually transmitted diseases. The presence of genital warts or abnormal cell changes can also increase the risk of co-infection with other viruses or bacteria.
